2011 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

TOURNAMENT  RESULTS

Aug 2 2011
Gentlemen Golfers & Hackers,

Finished the game, got in the car, read outside temperature 102 F. & I know the humidity is way up there.  No wonder!  Today was a miserable day to play golf.  Once more the course is in great shape, greens good & running fast, but come on!  It was HOT & HUMID!  But Gerry Quealy came in to test his bum knee & shot a nice round without further injury.  Only 19 of us played - but the tough ones!

Well, tough is tough, but Skip Davis brought his son Chip Davis to play today (the Great Oak High golf team player no less).  And to even things out he broke poor Chip's toe first!  At least that's how I heard it.  Of course Skip claims it was an accident - you know those clumsy teenagers.  But given a bad right foot, Chip really puts it down the road!  Very enjoyable company, And lots of laughs.  Glad to have him here, hope we could get a few more High School players during the Summer.

Gross Winners
Mateo Miller once again with a 76 wins Gross for $25.

Net Winners
Jim Brown & Bob Antol both shot 71 Net, which Bob won in a cardoff, $25 prize.
Poor Jim has to settle for $15 for 2nd.
3rd Net (which also got Gross 2nd) goes to Bill Christopher with a Net 72 ($10) and
Al Garcia settles in for the 4th place for $5.

KP's at $5 each go to:
Mateo Miller for 4th hole
John Hasch for 8th hole
Bob Antol for the 12th hole
Rod Sweeeeeeet for the 17th.

Another couple of notes:
Nathan Troutman, our erstwhile (meaning he's a good guy) Assistant Pro, competed in the SCPGA Assistant Championship, 36 holes at Soboba Springs, & did well, tying for 37th.  Congrats for good effort Nathan, and for upholding the reputation of Redhawk!

John Chin, who along with Grampa Bong Chin has joined us to play many times this year, competed in the Nationwide Tour Utah Championship Tournament.  He tied for 30th place.  No surprise that he ranked 8th in driving distance - clearly he is LONG.  Congratulations John, we're rooting for you!

Advance Notice for the world famous Marguerita Cup. OK, maybe just famous in Temecula, it is the competition along Marguerita Road, so is between Redhawk & Temeku Hills.  But it is important, if just for the Toucan Trophy - the ugliest trophy in high level golf!!!.  Anyhow, it will be conducted September 1 (Thursday) at Temeku and September 8 at Redhawk.  Bob Antol is working the Redhawk team of 12.

So far we have 4 teams for the Aug 16 Best Ball:  Sweet & Schoonmaker, JB & Alan dela S, Antol & Vannoy, Al Garcia & Keith Denver.  Good time to pair up with a buddy or send me an email to be on the "looking for a partner" list.

See you next week for regular golf.

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

We finally finished the Club Championship!  HooRay.  Complete results for the 2 day competition are at the bottom of this email.

First of all, thanks to our new President, Tai Kreider, for setting out all the tee markers & KP markers before the round.  REALLY early morning.

Second, thanks to our Secretary Bob Antol for doing all the accounting/score-keeping, and photography.  And getting the first pitcher of beer, I think!  Great job on all counts..

Finally, glad everybody showed up & got off all right.  Bob was our starter today, and he took over comfortably & got us all off on time, except for Al Garcia, who claims his wife told him the wrong tee time; likely story, but then Al is a great story teller!

          Now, the Club Championship Results:
   Gross -
Our CHAMPION is Mateo Miller with 2 days at 76 & 77, total of 153.  Nice consistency & nice scores Mateo.  Congratulations. Mateo is both Club Champ & with Gerry Quealy the Team Champ.  He will be a fine representative of the Club at SCGA competitions.

   Net -
Our NET CHAMPION is Rod Sweet with a 2 day total of 141.  Until today Rod was the Gross Champ, & for this year the Net.  Maybe next year we'll call this the Rod Sweet memorial tournament.
Congratulations Gentlemen.  Both received a really nice trophy that Tai arranged for us.  I will publish photos of the winners & their trophies as soon as I can.

In addition to the Club Championship, we had a
Regular Competition today, with the following results for the 25 competitors:

   Gross -
Mateo Miller with his 77 takes 1st, & award of $25.
2nd place gross goes to Rod Sweet with an 80 for an award of $10.
However, it got complicated; Alan de la Sierra shot a 79; however he took Net 71 to tie Rod Sweet for Net 1st.  Cardoff ensues for the Net award, which goes to Alan on the strength of a better back 9.
  Net -
The explanation above, Alan de la Sierra with Net 71 gets 1st Net & award of $25.
2nd Net goes to Skip Davis with a net 72 - Skip seems to get better every week - and gets award of $15.
Bob Antol, Keith Denver, & Tai Kreider had identical Net 73's, so they get to share $15 at $5 apiece.

   KP's $7.50 each
4th hole Alan dela Sierra
8th hole Jim Cherrington
12th hole Mateo Miller
17th hole Tai Kreider

The Club Championship has been fun, but a lot of extra effort.  I at least will be glad to get back to just playing golf.  Starting next week!  Whoopee!

Jul 19th

Gentlemen,

Some of you miserable so&sos played really well. Turkeys.  Im going to watch the Tour De France and pretend today never happened.  Only good thing going was the beer & lunch.  And the company of course.  And the course condition.  And everybody showed up & got off on time with no hassles.  OK, it was a pretty good day except for us yo-yos who cant play golf worth a hoot.

Good News: Tai Kreider is always volunteering to do something for us.  He & Bob Antol, our past two tournament directors, are major support entities for the club all the time.  Anyhow, today Tai set all the tee markers before the round.  Bad News:  Tai finished setting the tees 1 minute before his tee time, resulting in a 10 on the 1st hole.  Tai is always volunteering for some good duty, and is much appreciated; that is by everybody except his golf game.  Good/Bad News:  Ron Frederick OFFICIALLY tendered his resignation as President, after a year and a half.  We will miss him more than many people know.  Ron has been a fantastic leader, always encouraging the rest of us, always in the forefront of whats next, always the instigator of changes that need to be made.  Good News:  Tai will take over as President.  Now we all have to salute & call him SIR.  Or at least pay attention when he runs the Board Meetings.

As we all should know, today was round 1 of the club Championship.  However, in addition it was a tournament on its own.  Here are the results for todays tournament:

   Gross Results

1st Place goes to Mateo Miller (getting to be a habit!), 76, gets $30 award.

2nd Place goes to Ray Farmer, 78, award of $10

    Net Results

1st Place goes to Neil Miller (whats with Millers?), 81/68, award $30

2nd & 3rd Place was a tie with Rod Sweet, 79/70, and Dale Ferguson, 82/70, each get award of $17.50..

4th Place goes to Bob Antol, 86/71, award of $5

   KPs

Tai may not be able to score today, but he sure can hit par 3s close!

4th hole AND 8th hole closest was Tai Kreider  $15

12th hole award to Tom Hentila  $7.50

17th hole award to Charles Vannoy  $7.50

I will send out pairings for next week later.  And remember, even if you do NOT choose to compete in the club championship you CAN come & compete for the regular prizes, and I hope you will!   I need somebody in the last group with me, for moral support.  Mind, Martin Pharis will help maybe the only guy who did worse than me sorry to mention that Martin (ha ha).

Finally, to our 2 wounded warriors Gerry Quealy & Randy Murdoch, Ray Farmer says you guys don't know about knees, not yet!  Any case, all the best with repairs/rehabs, hope to see you back in the saddle real soon.  Missed you both today.

Gentlemen,

Great weather, and 29 players out today.  Biggest turnout in a while - nice to see all the smiling faces.

But NOBODY had a bigger smile than Dale Ferguson.   Dale has been barely justifying his 14 handicap, but today he shot a 79!  At the end of his round he warned his playing partners then let out a major WAR WHOOP to celebrate. Great Going Dale.

RESULTS
Gross 1st, Mateo Miller & Bill Christopher, playing together, both shot 78.  Mateo won the cardoff, gets top place for $30, poor Bill has to settle for 2nd & $15.

Net 1st no question goes to Dale Ferguson with a net 65.  Gets $30.  And a bunch of congratulations.
Net 2nd to Ray Carter who shot a dandy 66.  Would have been 1st any other day.  Award of $20
Net 3rd to Charles Vannoy, 70 for $15
Net 4th to Alan de la Sierra, 71 for $10

Closest to Pins get $7.50 each;
4th hole, Alan de la Sierra
8th hole, Jeff Nelson
12th hole, Dale Ferguson
17th hole, Martin Pharis

OK, everybody is warmed up for the club championship.  More info on that later, but see you for round 1 next week.

Jul 5th

Gentlemen Golfers,

One Hot Day!  My car thermometer said 99 F when I left the course.  Couple guys looked like the heat beat them.  Maybe that's why only 18 members played today, plus one guest.

Amazing thing.  The threesome of Carlos Cuero, Skip Davis & Larry Sheldrup finished in 3 Hours 55 Minutes!  Definitely a record for the club since I've been here.  Good Job. But don't expect any money for it!  Had the advantage of starting 1A.  But the slowest folks today finished in 4 Hours 35 Minutes, and that was starting from the 16th. We used to think even that was really good.  Not only are handicaps coming down, but completion times as well.

Results as follows:
Gross - Alan delaSierra shot a 79, which was the best of the lot today.  And danged good for a fella with an 8 handicap!  Low turnout means he gets $20 for it.  Mateo Miller shot an 82, for which he gets our heartfelt condolences and not much else for 2nd Gross - sorry Mateo.

Net - Bruce Worley, on the other hand, shot 'lights out' with a phenomenal 86 for net 68.  Great round Bruce.  I hear around the table that he and Rod Sweet had some bets going, and a whole bunch of trash-talk, and Bruce cleaned up. Net 1st gets $20.
And 2nd Gross goes to our long-time competitor Colonel Ray Carter with a 91 for net 72.  First time for a while - good going Ray.  Prize of $10.
We had to split Net 3rd & 4th (74's) so I offer a sort of consolation prize of $5 to Martin Pharis and Tom Crouch.  Pretty good round guys.

Closest-to-Pins, for award of $7.50 each
4th hole Jim Brown
8th hole Mateo Miller
12th hole Rod Sweet
17th hole Rod Sweet
The Sweet One got 2 KP's & still got his clock cleaned by Worley!  What a day.

See you next week, for the last round before the Club Championship.  One requirement for club champ is that he must have played 4 tournament rounds in 2011 before the competition.  So if you have 3, get with it!  (other requirements at the men's club web site:  http://www.redhawkmensclub.com/ )

June 28, 2011

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

We had 25 people today (1 guest) to enjoy a nice summer day & great course conditions.  Plus Steve Adamiak our Director of Instruction (thats head pro to you home-gamers), who came out & played some with several groups.  He was with our group when I made a natural birdie on 9, and one group after us, with Steve in that group by now, that turkey Rod Sweet made a bird on top of me!  You KNOW a Net 2 on #9 is ALWAYS worth a skin.  Not today.  Maybe Steve caused it all  (By the way, want some fine instruction, email Steve at the address in the CC box to set it up).

Bob Nissen had a dandy day, hitting 94 with a 25 handicap.  But Randy Murdoch (8 handicap) & Mike Baer (+1 handicap) also had great days.  So here we are with good results for folks from a plus 1 to 25. I think thats a definition of success for the club.  And 5 guys under net par.  And all of us finished in respectable time; the first group in barely over 4 hours, the last was in before 1PM.  Mike & Randy must have really pushed each other, playing in the same pairing.

What a day for your flaky Tournament Director.  First hole, outa-the-box, and I throw a tee ball OB.  Dang.  So I re-tee, and throw THAT one OB.  Double Dang.  So I am finally in the fairway laying 5.  What now?  I put a fairway shot OB!  Let me just say that I made a really good putt to save my 13.  It was a good 13 I take it back, there is no such thing as a good 13.  But you knew that..

So, here are the exciting results:

Gross 1st, Mike Baer, with a 74 gets $25 prize.

Gross 2nd, Jim JD Davidson with 77 gets $10.

Net 1st was Randy Murdoch with 76/68 for $25 prize.

Net 2nd was Bob Nissen with 94/69 for $15.

Net 3rd is a 3 way tie between Jim Brown, Skip Davis, and Alan Pruess.  Their consolation prize is $5 each.

All KPs are worth $7.50 each today.

KP 4th hole is Ken Lonie, a 22 handicap.

KP 8th hole is Randy Murdoch, no surpise there!

KP 12th hole is Carlos Cuero, a 30 handicap - and as you know my Hero!

KP 17th hole is Bob Nissen, our 25 handicap 2nd place guy!

I think NOBODY can claim that only the low handicappers get the KP awards!  Good going on the part of the 20+ guys - you done yourself proud...

By the way I can't help but notice that Vannoy has come up with skins like every week!  I'm carrying around $29 that he hasn't even bothered to pick up!  Oh, Sheldrup gets his share (again today), & Mateo &others.  But I think Van gets way more than his share.  Somebody should check him for performance-enhancements.

A great day, again.  Lets do it again next week!

Jun 21st

Hey Guys,

This had to be one of the most fun monthly tournaments yet.  If maybe not the easiest one for some of us to get the score right.  Or other difficulties.  Like   oh never mind.

Some of us had a great score.  In fact, TWO teams shot 64.  Thats 8 under par for you arithmetically challenged types you know who you are, & others know by looking at the score cards!  But I have to admit that it got a little complicated.

8 UNDER.  Wow.  Obvious that the greens were receptive & fast & true.  Though my ball never noticed.

Results:

The Winners, team of Mateo Miller & Gerry Quealy, with a 64 and 31 on the back 9.  This team has the option to be Redhawks representative to the SCGA 4-ball tournament as previously discussed.  Big Hand to Mateo & Gerry well done.  You get a prize of $120 for the team.

2nd place, also with a dandy 64 and 33 on the back 9, the Miller Boys, Neil Miller & Bill Miller.  Should the 1st team decide to not go to SCGA then these folks will get the nod.  Award of $60 for the team.

3rd, 4th & 5th place are achieved by teams with an identical score of 67.  We dont card-off for other than 1st place (see Mens Club Rules at the web site http://www.redhawkmensclub.com/news.htm. ).  Therefore these fine folks get honorable mention and $30 each:

Team of Dean Hellweg &Van Vannoy

Team Bob Antol & Rod Sweet

Team Skip Davis & Bruce Worley

Congratulations to all the winners, ALL under par.  Good Golf Gentlemen!

Next week regular golf..  See you then.

June 14th Results

Gentlemen,

The big news for the June 14 tournament is Geno Ketelsleger PLAYED.  Wow is an understatement!  Geno is in a rehabilitation program, and one part of the program is apparently to get more outdoor exercise.  He is working up to his old standard of play, but he is out there and what a pleasure to have him there.  GO GENO!

My thanks to Tai Kreider for handling the tournament while Carlos Cuero & I went to Primm, where Carlos was the hero.  More on that later.  And good to see that Randy Murdoch managed to tear himself away from his Hawaiian vacation mind set.

With all the non-Redhawk stuff going on we had a turnout of 15 players & 2 guests.  With the limited turnout we eliminated the KPs this week, put all the money in the score prizes, which are as follows:

Gross Results

Jim JD Davidson shot a fine 74 for a prize of $20

Mateo Miller close behind with a 77 for $12

Net Results

Gerry Quealy  tied Mateo in gross but got a Net of 70 for 1st place & $20

Randy Murdoch, with Hawaii off his mind made a Net 71 for 2nd & $13

Dale Ferguson came through with Net 73 for 3rd & $10

On to next weeks Presidents Cup, 2 Man Team Best Ball.

At the moment we have 3 teams and 2 fellas who want to be teamed.  Fine so far, but it would be nice to have a few more teams just need to have an index of 18.5 or less and a willingness to play the October 3 & 4 Tournament in Irvine and one qualifying tournament closer to home on a Monday or Tuesday August 29 or 30.  Let me know your willingness to play & well pair you.  Lots of fine members that could proudly represent the Club.  However, team or no, show up next week for regular golf as well.  Should be good weather & great course conditions.

See you then.

June 7th Results

Hey Guys,

Danged few of us showed up today.  A shame, as it was a fine day for golf.  Course is in great condition with the exception of a few fairways still being verti-cut.  Light wind, perfect temperature.

Bill Miller turned it up nicely.  Despite having 3 or 4 3-putt greens, he managed to put in a fine 77.  And Alan delaSierra did his usual & got a net 70; getting routine for Alan.

The Score Card

18 players + 1 guest (Biagio Sanzone)

Bill Miller Gross 1st place 77 gets a prize of $20

Alan delaSierra Net 1st place 79/70 gets a prize of $20

Bill Christopher (81/73) AND Bob Antol (89/73) tie for Net 2nd/3rd place, for prize of $15 each.

$5 prizes for each of the Closest-To-Pins:

KP #4, Tai Kreider (your Tournament Director next week)

KP #8,  Dan Hilton

KP #12, Tom Crouch

KP #17, Jim Brown about 6 inches, beating out Alan delaSierra who was about 12 inches.

Next week, your regular Tournament Director, along with a BUNCH of regular players, will be at Primm with our Temeku Hills friends.  But our 2-prior Tournament Director, Mr. Tai Kreider, has volunteered to take care of the gang next week.  Tai keeps me straight, along with Bob Antol, just about every week.  Thanks Guys, I do appreciate your regular help.

See you in a couple weeks,

May 31st Results

Redhawk Golfers,

The day started before we left the cart area.  Our course manager gave us the sad  for us news that he was leaving Redhawk.  After some 9 or so years being our buddy at Temeku and Redhawk, Tony Quealy has decided to leave the Redhawk paradise in order to work at a winery in San Mateo .  Can you imagine that choice!  From fairways to fine wine.  Handicaps to Cabernets.  Tony has been a real friend to the Mens Club these several years, and will be sorely missed.  Gotta wish him all the best.  If you would like to leave a personal message give him an email at tquealy@cscgolfmanagement.com.  Or a personal howdy over the next week or so.  Fortunately his dear father our member Gerry Quealy will remain in paradise.

While Tony will be missed, he is leaving us a very fine replacement in Drew Cook (dcook@cscgolfmanagement.com).   While were at it, we should recognize the fellas we see in the shop most every week, including Dean Hellweg (Assistant Manager & a club member, and the fella who prepares all our scrip prizes), Mike Baer (a club member & big bomber with the driver), Allen Batty (yeah, a club member as well!), Nathan Troutman (dang good golfer as well as teacher), Mateo Miller (another regular club player) and Isaac Morgan. We are lucky to have such a fine staff to work with.  Thanks Guys I'm sure I've missed some nice guys, for which I apologize, but I'm old & that's as good as my memory can do.

Other than our start, we had one fine if slightly windy day.  22 competitors came out & brought 2 guests.  And the last group finished in a bit under 5 hours.  Greens remain in very nice shape, good speed but receptive.  A few of the fairways are being verti-cut (or whatever you call it) but that is no big deal.  Altogether another very good day.  And this is a day after the holiday where some 270 (?) golfers came out.

We welcome one new player today, Jeff Okun.  Hope to see you a lot  Jeff.

As to results, this was too danged complicated;

Gross Results

Ron Frederick, Bill Miller, & Alan delaSierra shot identical 78s.  Alan got the net award, so Ron & Bill tied, so there was a card off as provided in the club rules (see our web site at redhawkmensclub.com).  Ron won the card off so Bill gets 2nd.  Ron gets $25, Bill gets $15.

Net Results

Alan delaSierra blew us out with a fine 69 net ($25 prize).

For 2nd place net we take out the net scores of Ron & Bill (net 71s) because they made gross awards, so Lee Wortman with a very nice net 71 gets it ($15).

Closest to Pin Awards for $7.50 each

4th hole Dale Ferguson

8th hole JD Davidson

12th hole Ron Frederick

17th hole Bill Miller

All but 6 of our players today shot in the net 70s.  Dont remember this happening ever.  Were getting good!

Next week with new handicaps will be regular golf.  See you then.

May 24th Results

Gentlemen,

One fine day for golf.  Great weather.  Course in very nice shape.  The monthly tournament (Red, White & Blue) went off with only a few hitches.  First group out finished in 4:15.  Amazing how little difference the varying tees seem to make!  At least for me, I could screw up from ANYWHERE.

Before going into the winners for today, let me once more make the suggestion that any member who has not done it, visit the web site.  There really is a lot of info there. See the site at http://www.redhawkmensclub.com/.

In response to a question today, the prize amount is different for the monthly tournaments as detailed at the web site.  In accordance with the policy established by the Board of Directors, the monthly tournaments have a prize fee of $10 versus $5 for the regular tournaments, and the awards given out are the sum of the prize fee plus a bit from the general fund, currently about $50.  So the total prize fund for this month was 22 players times $10 plus $50 from the general fund or $270.  So thats where the money comes from.  The distribution of prize money is way more complicated, but again there is a philosophy on the web site.

Who are these "Board of Directors"??  Could be YOU.  In a few months the Board of Directors will be once again up for election; consider your interest & attitude.  Volunteers always needed!  See the various offices at the web site. (See how I brought in another reference to the web site?  Sneaky, huh)

Gross Prizes

Mateo Miller 81 for $60

Ron Frederick, 82 for $30

Net Prizes

Lee Wortman 87/16 for net 71 for $60

Tom Crouch 97/25 for net 72 for $45

Bill Christopher & Larry Sheldrup have to share 3rd, both 83/9 for net 74, $15 each

KPs for $10 each:

4th hole seems to be a tie between Larry Sheldrup & Ray Carter, so they will split $10 ($5 each).  I know, how do you TIE a KP beats me

8th   hole winner Gerry Quealy

12th hole winner Mateo Miller

17th hole winner Ray Carter

May 17th

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

This was one lousy day for golf!  As a result only 12 of us stalwart individuals showed up.  Stalwart is old English for DUMB.  What else can you call people who play in the rain in California.  One group off of 1st, 18th, & 17th.  Shot the worst scores we ever had.  Finished well wet.  And some of us expect to do it again tomorrow at Temeku.

But there were a lot of record-making happenings today.  Here are what I think are the firsts for this outing:

·         Smallest group of players ever (only 12 plus a guest who left by the 9th hole).

·         Highest winning net score (77 by Jim Cherrington).  At least a record as far as I know.

·         Largest number of skins; 10.  Count ‘em, 10.  Never saw the likes.  $5 each skin.  Hardly worth the effort.  Except maybe for those low-life’s who got 2 skins (Larry, Tai, & Van).

·         Highest winning gross score ever (85 by John Hasch).

·         Quietest Cantina after the round – we could actually hear everybody!   With several folks off to Temeku for the par 3 Member-Guest, we had like 5 people in the bar.

·         All the KP’s came from the same group (2 to your TD, 1 to Carlos, 1 to Tai, 17th hole starting group.  And we remembered to pick up all the tee markers…)

It was wet enough that some of the paper came off the KP markers, all the markers were nearly too wet to write on, the score cards were soaked so you could hardly put down a score, the cart seats were wet after the first 3 holes, Tai grew 2 inches from the accumulation of wet grass on his shoes – in short it was just like Spring-time in Washington!  But despite all the wet & weird, it was a good time.  Just hope we don’t have to repeat the weather again soon.  Hitting a rescue club from very wet very long rough – ugh!  This is California – where the Governor has a love-child.  Not supposed to rain!

With only 12 players, total prizes only $60, here’s the results:

Gross 1st place to John Hasch, 85.  Earns  $20.

Net 1st place;  Jim Cherrington, 77.  Earns $20

Closest to pins (KP’s):

Jim Schoonmaker on 4th & 12th holes, $10

Tai Kreider on the 8th hole, $5

Carlos Cuero on the 17th hole, $5

Here’s hoping that the rest of our Summer is not as wet as today.  See you next week – and not just you Stalwart types!  Gonna be the Red, White & Blue tournament.  Nice dry fun.

May 10th Results

Gentlemen,

Great Day for Golf.  After starting cool it warmed up to perfection.  For some reason, I have no idea what, we were really a short gang today.  Well, actually I know some of the reasons; injury, vacations, illnesses, Mother’s Day, and probably a bunch of other reasons.  But no matter, we valiant few who played had a great time.   Not much for scoring, with few exceptions, but a great time.

Congratulations to us all for the pace of play.  Group 1A finished in 4 hours 15 minutes.  The last group finished in 4 ½ hours.  Sure beats the heck out of the old 5 hour rounds that used to be routine.  As mentioned in the pre-round letter, the carts left the parking area at 7:50 AM, we teed at 8AM, & we were eating and/or drinking by 12:15.

Neil Miller & Bob Antol won ALL the skins for $35 each.  Only 2 skins.  Carlos beat me out for my only chance!  Turkey! (You can say the same of me, it’s expected).

Lee Loudenbach was in today after the round.  He tells us he is leaving for Thailand, to be gone for probably a year or more.  We’ll miss you Lee, and wish you the best.

With only 16 players the prize pool is an anemic $80.  So, prizes are pretty limited; but then the typical level of play, except for Quealy, Pharis & Christopher, was pretty limited!

Gross 1st; Gerry Quealy with 76.  Prize of $25.  Good Round Gerry.

Net 1st; Martin Pharis with 72.  Prize of $25.

Net 2nd; Bill Christopher with 73.  Prize of $10

Closest-to-pin, worth $5 each.

4th hole: Mateo Miller

8th hole: Gerry Quealy

12th hole: Chad Dodd

17th hole: Tai Kreider

Bill Christopher was crossed off twice, Dan Hilton was beat twice, and Carlos was beat once.  Lots of competition on the short holes!

 See you next week,

May 3rd Results:

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

What a day!  Planned on 25 players, got 30.  Great turnout!  Hope everybody had a good time.

A big welcome to several new players: I had the pleasure of playing with Chad Dodd, recently from Georgia he was looking good for 2 KPs until Bill Christopher came along!.  Bill Christoff played with us for the first time.  Mateo Miller made a rare appearance with us, as did Biagio.  Scott Cunningham, Bob Nissen, and Tom Crouch are becoming pretty regular a good thing.

For some reason, the greens got hot and fast, and then they were carefully ROLLED by our magnificent ground crew.  Dang they were fast.  But they still were soft enough to hold chips.  Best greens in a while.  Kudos to Superintendent John Beggan & crew.  Keep it UP dude.

Results.

KPs (Closest to pin) for $7.50 each:

Hole #4,  Bill Christopher

Hole #8,  Dale Ferguson

Hole #12, Bill Christopher (again!)

Hole #17, Lee Puff Wortman (ask him about the name yourself!)

Gross Score

Gross 1st place, Jim JD Davidson shot a nice 73.  Thats 2 times in a row for him at 73.  Earns him $30 prize.

Gross 2nd place, Bill Christopher with 77 not too shabby either, earns $20.

Net Score

Net 1st place, 70 (85 15) is yours truly Jim Schoonmaker.  $30 prize.

Net 2nd place, 71 (78 7) is Rod Sweet with his new clubs. $20 prize.

Net 3rd place, 73 (86 13) goes to Scott Cunningham.  $10 prize.

Net 4th place, 75 tied Dan Hilton (84 9) and Lee Wortman (91 16).  $5 prize each.

I think our pace of play was pretty good this week, though I forgot to look at the clock.

Once more I really appreciate notice of your intent to play by Sunday before the Tuesday tournament.  I have family commitments on Monday evening so if I dont get notice by Sunday it is not possible to make up personalized score cards or pairing sheets.  Later entrants will be assigned to whichever group has openings.  But whatever, notice or no notice, come on out and play!  Hope to see all this good tournout next Tuesday as well.

April 26th Results

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

Today we had Grackles (like noisy black-birds who fly with their tail vertical instead of horizontal), Pileated Woodpeckers, Rufus Hummingbirds, and a pair of Red-tail hawks on the 12th.  Good day for birdwatchers.  And for those who like bullfrogs croaking we have the ponds at the 10th & 13th.  Also another beautiful day, moderate & sunny, course in great shape, greens rolling great, & soft enough to hold a 4 iron.  21 of us enjoyed it a bunch well maybe 19 enjoyed it, excluding Hellweg & Murdoch who Xd out even with pretty good scores.

Results as follows:

Gross 1st Ron Frederick (Mr. President) with 78 for $25 prize

Followed closely by Dan Hilton with 79 for $15 prize

      Net 1st is Skip Davis with 68 (87 19) for $25 prize

Net 2nd/3rd is shared by Tom Crouch (97 27) and

      Dick Mathey (95 25) for 70 earning $12.50 each.

KPs (closets-to-pins) are Bill Christopher for all the front 9, 4th & 8th, earning $10

Bob Antol on 12th, REALLY close, for $5

Ron Frederick on 17th, for $5.

But I dont care what you guys think, the BEST shot of the day was yours truly on #3, with a tee ball that went to 70 yards!  Right of the pond, short grass, a John Chin kind of shot!  OK, I had a little assistance from the cart path, and Ill grudgingly admit that I was aiming a little left of where it went, but come on to 70 yards on a par 4 with a pond!  For a guy who struggles to hit 200 yard tee balls, I will remember this shot for a really long time.  With Tom Crouch & Dean Hellweg for witnesses.  OK, Ill quit bragging now.  Begrudgingly

April 12th

Gentlemen Golfers,

Good News after the course people pushed and pushed (Bob is a good pusher), the 1A Group finished in 4 hours 25 minutes.  I think this may be some kind of record for the Club.  Didnt seem like it was particularly rushed at that.  Bad News the last group was an hour later.  But it IS a long drive to 16.

Big welcome back to Randy Murdoch, after laying off for a while, and his guest Dale Bennet who used to be a member.  And Bill Miller after a winter of skiing somebodys gotta live the good life!  And Relatively new folks KB, Tom Crouch, and Bob Nissen good to have you all.  Hope to see you guys regularly.

Seemed like a nice day, the course was just a little rough in the rough due to plugging and limited mowing, but everything else was great shape. Even had the driving range on the grass and all the putting/chipping areas available.  Despite that, and 4 fellas under net par, a lot of us played like fish.  Oh well, it was a nice day out.

Heres the exciting results with only 21 players in the competition:

NET COMPETITION

Tai Kreider, shot 85 for 67 net, earning $25

Larry Sheldrup shot 81 for a net 70, earning $15

Bong Chin shot 82 for net 71, earning $8

GROSS COMPETITION

Geno Ketelsleger shot 76 for $25

Bill Christopher shot 79 for $8

Bill Miller also shot 79 for $8.  Not bad for a first day back, Bill.

Close To Pins RESULTS

#4   Geno Ketelsleger, $5

#8   Tai Kreider, $5

#12 Jim Brown, $5

#17 Bill Christopher, $5

Funny how the KP awards seem to go to the guys with the good scores for the day.  ?Some correlation there you suppose?

Carlos Cuero decided NOT to do skins 29 handicaps never win and would have won with a great 2 on #17.  After putting in his $5 dang near every other week, there is no justice..  Poor old Carlos!

Poor Bob Antol limped on the course, then limped off.  Hurting so bad he didnt stay to drink beer or flirt with Lynne.  Lee Loudenback came in to flirt with Lynne even though he didnt play got a good attitude that fella.  Of course Tai Kreider, while amped up on good drugs for his arthritis, proceeded to shoot lights out and whomp us all net.  Beginning to sound like our neighbor to the north with all the weak, lame & lazy.  And you can tell the guys at Temeku I called them that well, maybe not, with so many of us not doing any better.  And besides, the fine gentlemen at Temeku have invited us to participate in their day at Journey, which Bob Antol is coordinating need to get him a check or $50 coin by next Tuesday.

By the way, next week is the Devil Ball tournament.  Well pair up with 4 man teams balanced by handicaps.  Pairings will be done at the course depending on who shows up.  This will be one of those wild ones and should be a lot of fun.  I would still appreciate a heads-up for who will show just so I can tell the course people how many to expect.  Details will be sent out later in the week.

April 5, 2011

Gentlemen Golfers of Redhawk,

Yes it WAS an interesting experiment.  Playing in Flights.  On Monday night the flights had the same number of folks in each, but by Tuesday morning things changed a bit so we had slightly more Cats of the 22 players.

First, the results:

Turkey #1 of 7 turkeys, handicaps of 3 to 8, was Gerry Quealy, net 75

Turkey #2 was John Arnold, net 77

Cat #1 of 9 Cats, handicaps of 9 to 16, was Bob Antol, net 66

Cat #2 was Jim Brown, net 67

Top Dog of 6 Dogs, handicaps 17 to 29, was Jim Peery, net 74

Dog #2 was Dick Mathey, net 76

As you can see, Bob Antol & Jim Brown played Fantastic!  Out of their Minds!  I cant help it: Cats Rule!  Maybe thats going too far.  And Gerry Quealy reported that he took personal affront to being a Turkey even though he was #1 Turkey today.  Funny, nobody complained about being Cats & Dogs..  Whats UP with That?

Anyhow, looking to compare Flight competition to our regular way of play:

Gross 1 would have been Jim Brown 78, Gross 2 John Arnold 80,

Net 1 Bob Antol 66, Net 2 Jim Brown 67 (Gross instead), Net 3 Bong Chin 71, Net 4 Larry Sheldrup 74.

Bong Chin & Larry lost out in this context, but Jim Peery & Dick Mathey gained.  The rest remained pretty much the same.  One of the purposes of this experiment was to see if it gave the higher handicap players any advantage, and maybe that is the case; Peery with a 17 handicap is on the top of that Dog Flight, and Mathey with a 25 is not, so it seems we spread out the prizes, today at least.

Another purpose was to find out if the top players would enjoy playing from the Blue Tees; they report they liked it a lot, just werent used to it!

.Anyhow, for awards, each of the Flight winners will get $20, each Flight 2nd gets $10, each KP $5.  Oh Yeah KPs

#4 was JD

#8 was Jim Brown

#12 was Jim Brown

#17 was Jim Peery

Notice one Turkey (JD), one Cat (Brown twice), and one Dog (Peery).  Sounds pretty balanced to me, even though the Turkeys were playing Blue and the rest of us Whites. And poor Carlos Cuero he was Closest To Pin on #17 until Perry came along and whomped him.

Skins were won by Bob Antol (Cat), Alan delaSierra (Cat), Geno Ketelsleger (Turkey), and  Jim Peery (Dog).  Long story from JD about Genos skin by making some amazing chip on #13.

Thanks Jim Brown for taking so many prizes - but on the other hand bringing in replacements for the tee markers we somehow managed to lose (which JB made up in the first place).

Weather was great, turnout not so much, greens were outstanding, fairways lush, and the rough absolutely sucked!  And those of us who found ourselves in the rough way too much suffered.  Just like playing with the Pros.

New players Joe Dailey and Mark Alexander; welcome to the world of tournament golf.  It is tough the first time out.  Hang in there. Hope to see you in coming weeks.

Next week is regular golf.  And NOBODY forgot we start at 8AM.  Amazing.  See you then.

March 29 2011

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

My sincere apologies to Alan delaSierra; I was about to rename us the delaSierra Benefit Society, but I put the jinx on poor Alan, and he acted just like a regular golfer rather than the Superman that we know he is.  Just for this week, probably.  Maybe he will give us mere mortals another chance in the future.  We can only live in hope...

On a higher note - we welcome some new players.
KB, yes that's his entire name, joined us today.  He does not have a handicap yet, but intends to be a regular player.
Jeff Nelson joined us for the first time today, and he should have a USGA handicap by next tournament.
Tom Crouch also came in today for time #1, and we'll need to work with him on getting a tournament handicap quick..
Welcome Gentlemen, good to have you on board.  Hope you're with us a lot...
There were 23 regular competitors, and 28 with new guys and guests.  Good turnout for us.  Means we had to go back to the 16th hole, which is a bit of a pain.

Speaking of pain, a few fellas should make an extra effort to keep up the pace.  We all need to help that process, to keep the rounds to 4 1/2 hours plus or minus.

Started out foggy, got clear, ended up hot.  Fairways green but tight.  Greens very nice - I have no excuse for how badly I putted.  Beautiful day.  Mixed comments about my attempt to 'mix em up' regarding handicap groupings, but I think both lower and higher handicap players got something out of the experiment.  Probably not to be repeated any time soon.

DON'T FORGET, NEXT WEEK WE START AT 8AM.

Tournament Results
Gross Winners
     Dan Hilton            73/64  $25
     Geno Ketelsleger  76/71  $10

Net Winners
     Ron Frederick       76/66  $25
     Tai Kreider           87/69  $13
     Jim Brown            81/70 $12
     Pete Johnson       84/72 $10

Closest to pin award of $5 each:
    KP #4, Jim Cherrington
    KP #8, Ray Farmer
    KP #12, Bruce Worley
    KP #17, Bruce Worley
Somebody asked me why KP and not CP.  Actually I THINK that KP stands for Bruce Worley Benefit Hole.  But maybe not; he was stomped on at #4 by Cherrington after initially signing the marker.

Well another one down & done.  Hope to see a bunch of folks next week, when we will have another exciting experiment, to be the subject of another email.

Later,
